Revised and edited February 2016 (Sequel to A Gathered radiance) lady Helena Templeton Forsyth is arrested for shoplifting and GBH. Unable to pay a fine, she retells the story of her time in the SOE in the hope of gaining sympathy from the magistrate. It's a tale of bitter rejection, danger, courage, love, betrayal and heartache, but will the magistrate even care? Or will he still decide to make an example of someone he sees as a geriatric hooligan?
The Feral Spy eBook Joyce L Weaver
The Feral Spy By Joyce Weaver.Having thoroughly enjoyed A Gathered Radiance, I was anxious to read this sequel. It is indeed another fascinating time slip story. Set initially in the present and then going back in time intermittently, to before and during the war, we follow Helena Templeton's dramatic life story. As a young, rebellious, vengeful girl in the early 1930s she has an uncanny knack of getting herself into all sorts of trouble.
Educated at home initially by a scheming governess, whom she strongly dislikes, things go from bad to worse, when the woman later becomes her step-mother. By which time, Helena and her cruel, insensitive father Edward Templeton have become totally alienated.
Eventually her own mother takes her away to France, where her grandparents live. There she gets expelled from a brutal convent school in Grenoble for her mutinous behaviour. She's then sent to a boarding school in Geneva, but is kicked out after blowing up the science lab and nearly immolating herself in the process. This act alone is to bring her future ramifications.
When Helena learns that her father, has allowed his petulant step-daughter Marguerite and scheming step-son Luke, to become his lawful heirs, yet another rancorous facet to Helena's story begins.
Indeed, throughout the book, Helena displays constant vitriolic resentment towards them, their mother Joan and her father, and this turns her into an even more revengeful young woman... who is always flying into rages, using venomous, bad language!
Helena is an extremely well drawn, feisty character, but owing to her sometimes offensive temper, she's quite hard to warm to, particularly in the first half of the book. However, I have a feeling that this is intended by the author.
Even in the beginning, when, as a pitiful old lady (in present time), who has fallen on desperately hard times, she somehow fails to endear herself to me, as we witness her supermarket shoplifting antics. Then of course by violently resisting arrest she understandably ends up on serious charges of assault.
Hence, persuaded by her defence lawyer, she eventually begins to tell her protracted story to hopefully save herself from going to prison. And so, as we slip back and forth between the past and present, one does slowly begin to appreciate what has turned her into quite the wild, aggrieved person she is.
This multifaceted tale has you shocked, saddened and horrified in many ways, and sometimes all at the same time! All of which keeps you gripped and wanting to read on.
Helena's many exploits as war time spy, Claudette, in occupied France, are most graphically realised, and written with such pathos, that for me these alone elevate this book to another level completely. There are some impressive accounts of sacrifice and bravery, during some truly horrific, heart rending scenes of carnage!
In contrast though, Dylan's character and his part in the story, past and present... is to my mind, more temperate and self controlled. But he most certainly has a most appealing, valid place in the storyline, adding a little gentle romance to this hugely dramatic tale, which all rounds off, despite its many twists and turns, to a satisfying conclusion.
No spoilers from me though, about the vast complexities of this roller coaster of a story, past and present... you must read this impressive book for yourself to discover why I have no hesitation in awarding it 5 worthy stars.

The Feral Spy eBook Joyce L Weaver Reviews
THE FERAL SPY by Joyce Weaver is quite simply a marvellous novel and read.
I don't know when I last enjoyed a book so much. I was sorry when it finally ended and it is a big book, over 500 pages -- a sweeping war saga with lots of highly interesting characters and a complex plotline. It shifts seamlessly between the present day and 1940s WWII. The author transitions the story beautifully so the reader never gets lost.
This is a sequel to Weaver's A GATHERED RADIANCE, but can be read as a stand alone story.
From the blurb Dylan Cooper has spent most of his life mourning the death of a young woman he'd fallen in hopelessly in love with during the war. He knew her simply as Claudette. He was a downed airman and she was a hunted spy with a price on her head. They'd been flung together briefly then cruelly torn apart by circumstances that neither of them could have envisioned. And for the rest of his life, Dylan has been making an annual pilgrimage to the Maquis cemetery near the Plateau de Glières to put flowers on her grave. He gets an unpleasant shock when he discovers she hadn't died after all. He reads in the paper that Lady Helena Templeton Forsyth has been arrested for stealing cat food, resisting arrest and is facing four counts of assault and actual bodily harm. He realizes who she is and sets out to find her. Helena is now living in dire poverty and cannot afford to pay a fine. She is persuaded by her defence solicitor to retell the story of her disastrous time in the S.O.E. in the hope of eliciting sympathy from the magistrate. What follows is a tale of profound sadness, bravery, sacrifice and betrayal...but will the magistrate even care?
Weaver has constructed a novel that has all the power and imagery of Gone With the Wind and equally memorable characters. Not all very nice people mind you, but interesting. Great realistic dialogue too. I have to be honest and say the book does have some editing flaws in several places, but not serious enough to spoil the story. These are easily fixed up and I will email the author with my suggestions.
I read this book over a week and it was literally difficult to put down. There is plenty of romance for those who like that stuff. I was also very impressed with the author's impeccable research about the war and SOE activities.
THE FERAL SPY is a first class spy, historical thriller. Worth a solid 5-stars!
